As mediocre as most movie tie-in videogames are, it's been something of a relief to see that Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters will serve to augment the Green Lantern film rather than simply replay its source material. Of course, that doesn't mean new info on the game doesn't help to shed some light on Warner Bros.' June 17 release. As expected, the game will allow players to create a number of familiar GL constructs (a giant Hal-Jordian fist, a gattling gun, etc.) and fly through cosmic and terrestrial environments. What was perhaps less-than expected, however, is the news that players will have the option to play as both movie-accurate versions of Hal Jordan (voice by star Ryan Reynolds) and Sinestro, with the option for drop in/out teamups. The GL filmmakers have been pretty adamant about Sinestro staying on the straight and narrow in the film, so it's nice to see that affirmed in Rise of the Manhunters. Of course, it might have been nice to play as a less humanoid member of the corps like Kilowog, but maybe the Double Helix and WB Games are waiting to reveal further info until closer to the game's June 1 release date across most contemporary gaming consoles. There could be hope for unlockable Abin Sur or Tomar-Re reskins given their humanoid bodies.

The game's official synopsis seems to synch pretty well with what we know about the upcoming Green Lantern Animated series, which will also hone in on the threat of the Manhunters in the second half of its season:

The Manhunters are an android race, originally created by the Guardians of the Universe to serve as the first interstellar police force. The Manhunters became more obsessed with administering punishment than serving justice, forcing the Guardians to dissolve their ranks. The few Manhunters that survived fled into exile and the Guardians founded a new elite police force called the Green Lantern Corps and armed its members with specially crafted power rings. Now the Manhunters are back and out for revenge, readying their forces for a war against the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps. Faced with destruction, the Corps is looking to you as the newest recruit, gifted but cocky test pilot Hal Jordan, to protect peace and preserve justice.
