Brian K. Vaughan Announces ‘Saga,’ New Ongoing Sci-Fi Series at Image Comics [Comic-Con]

Almost a year after the final issue of his long-running Ex Machina series hit shelves, Y: The Last man and Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan announced at Comic-Con today that he has a creator-owned ongoing comic book series called Saga in the works for 2012 at Image Comics.

Co-created and illustrated by artist Fiona Staples, Saga is a "balls to the wall sci-fi book," as Vaughan called it during the Image Comics panel today, and will focus on a very unusual family and their struggle to survive in the midst of an intergalactic war.While details about the plot are still scarce, Vaughan told ComicsAlliance that Saga is "it's set in an epic, vast sci-fi universe, but this is really a story about a family, and it's inspired by my own experience having kids." Although, he added, this family has "horns and wings and things."

Saga will debut with a forty-four pages first issue and will also feature no advertisements, and Vaughan said that he has no ambitions for it to become a movie or television show: "The comic should be the destination... not the blueprint."

Vaughan also told ComicsAlliance that he plans for Saga to be even longer than Ex Machina, which ran for fifty issues. "I've been gone from the stands for a while, so it's nice to be back," Vaughan told ComicsAlliance.
