Toho has released the first theatrical trailer for Gyakuten Saiban aka Ace Attorney, based on the very popular Capcom video game series starring fictional defense attorney Phoenix Wright, and it is everything fans of the Nintendo DS titles wished for. The film is directed by Takashi Miike, best known to North American audiences for the memorably ultra-violent movies Ichi the Killer and Audition, and follows the outrageous adventures of lawyer Phoenix Wright as he defends his clients against the accusations of longtime rival, prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, with the prodigious use of research, evidence and his signature catchphrase, "OBJECTION!" While even the especially operatic and even supernatural courtroom style of the Phoenix Wright games may not seem like that big a deal to the uninitiated, the game's outlandish "high concept" becomes evident (heh) when one takes into account that in Japan, more than 99% of all brought to court result in conviction, making Phoenix something of a superhero. With that in mind, it shouldn't be too difficult to follow what's going on in this clip, which is entirely in Japanese and without subtitles.

Ace Attorney is to debut in Japanese cinemas sometime in 2012.
