20th Century Fox is finally releasing the Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past next month, re-incorporating the scenes featuring Anna Paquin’s Rogue, which director Bryan Singer had to leave on the cutting room floor. Singer previously explained that the Rogue scenes were excised because they were “extraneous,” but that didn’t stop fans from wanting to see the alternate version. Fox has released a clip from the Rogue Cut to give you a little taste of what that version will look like.

You can tell in the clip above that something is a little…off. It’s a brief scene, but the rhythm doesn’t quite work as we cut between Iceman reviving Rogue (who is wearing some sort of foil on her head like she’s expecting alien visitors) and Michael Fassbender’s young Magneto — the latter part was featured in the final cut of Days of Future Past, with Magneto retrieving his helmet after breaking out of the government facility.

What’s new here, aside from the Rogue scene, is Magneto staring at a coin — that’s the same Nazi coin he used to kill Shaw in First Class. It’s not clear why that particular bit is necessary. As a nod to First Class, Magneto staring at that coin just goes on for way too long. Without any context, we have no idea what’s up with Rogue or why these scenes are cut together the way they are.

Hopefully the full Rogue Cut will help explain, but you definitely get the sense from the above clip that Singer may have made the right call in cutting her subplot.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Rogue Cut hits shelves on July 14. If you’re heading to Comic-Con, you’ll have the chance to watch a full preview screening of the cut there.
