When Jena Malone was spotted on the set of Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman, the rumor mill kicked into high gear. Was she playing a hero? A villain? A new character? And established character? Anyway, everyone eventually decided that she was playing the new Robin, but it turns out that the internet was (surprise, surprise) very wrong. A new report claims that the Hunger Games star will be playing one of Batman’s most famous allies, just not the one we expected.

According to Latino Review, Malone will be playing Barbara Gordon, the daughter of police commissioner Jim Gordon, who eventually becomes the vigilante Batgirl and after that the hacker/computer genius known as Oracle (she’s back to being Batgirl again in the comic books because comic books). It’s unlikely that Malone will actually suit up in Batman vs. Superman, but this casting suggests that Malone could easily pop up in future DC movies to fight crime alongside Bruce Wayne.

Minor (and somewhat unconfirmed) spoilers lurk in the next paragraph, so feel free to skim to the end.

Malone playing Barbara Gordon is interesting for a number of reasons. First of all, Malone is a rising star and a totally watchable actress, so it’s a good catch for the new DC movie universe. Secondly, Batman vs. Superman seemingly takes place in a world where both Jim Gordon and Robin are dead and Batman is more depressed and lost than ever. It’s entirely possible that a new partner, the daughter of his closest Gotham City ally, could come into his life and teach him all kinds of valuable life lessons. Put money on that happening eventually.

Batman vs. Superman will open on March 26, 2016.
