Well, now this is something of a surprise atop last night’s renewal of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. Marvel has apparently decided not to follow through with its Mockingbird-centric spinoff after all, despite weeks of development and negotiations.

According to Deadline, Marvel has quietly “put the brakes on” the untitled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, which was to feature Season 2 characters Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) in leading roles. Fans and critics alike found the move to spinoff somewhat puzzling regardless, as Palicki and Blood have proven themselves some S.H.I.E.L.D.’s strongest additions for Season 2.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. EP Jeffrey Bell and series writer Paul Zbyszewski were to spearhead the project for the fall, without the aid of a backdoor pilot, though the network considered short promo reel or independent pilot. Zbyszewski was also expected to serve as showrunner, though ABC wouldn’t issue a greenlight without seeing a script.

Still unclear is if John Ridley’s MCU project will gain any traction, now that the writer’s other ABC series American Crime has been renewed for Season 2, but hey, at least we get Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 and Agent Carter Season 2! Maybe we’ll even get to keep Mockingbird and Hunter, who presumably survive Tuesday’s finale!

Would you have wanted to see the pair granted their own Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff? What other corner of the MCU might the series have mined?
