Debuting its first episode in less than a week, AMC’s Preacher has managed to keep a majority of its supernatural bent under wraps, but gets far weirder by its very first scene. See for yourself, as the first four-minute opening scene has arrived, taking us far from God’s country at first, but not without a bit of toilet humor.

AMC released the first four minutes from Sunday’s premiere, which itself will re-air on May 29, followed by Chris Hardwick’s unmemorably-named Talking Preacher. In the meantime, the first-look clip takes a surprising trip to outer space, before descending back to earth, and introducing us to Dominic Cooper’s down-and-out Jesse Custer.

For those unfamiliar with the 1990s comic series from Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, AMC’s official description of Preacher reads:

“Preacher” is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a West Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power. Jesse, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vagabond named Cassidy come together and when they do, they are thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between.

The original Preacher had itself been optioned for various adaptations many times over the years, while AMC’s incarnation will deviate from the comic in certain respects. Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the new series, while fellow producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directed the pilot episode, having written the script with Catlin.

Preacher will officially premiere on May 22, so check out our interviews with Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga, and stay tuned for the latest.
