The New ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Clip Is That Water Fight We’ve All Been Waiting For
The whitewashing controversy surrounding Ghost in the Shell may keep it from becoming 2017’s big box office hit, despite how faithfully the filmmakers have recreated some of the most visually-arresting scenes from the 1995 original. It’s a bummer that Motoko Kusanagi is now Mara Killian because the movie looks absolutely gorgeous, as evidenced in this new clip, which takes its cues directly from an iconic scene in the original.
Star Daniel Kaluuya Likens ‘Black Panther’ to Fantasy Epic ‘Game of Thrones’
Black Panther is one of Marvel’s most exciting upcoming projects — the first film in the MCU to have a majority Black cast, a Black protagonist, and a Black director at the helm, and set in an entirely new, mysterious location we’ve only gotten a 30-second look at in a post-credits stinger. And as if we didn’t have enough of a reason to be excited about Black Panther, here’s a little reminder that Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya is in it! He recently spoke about how excited he was for the movie, and compared its epic scope to that HBO show you might’ve heard of, Game of Thrones.
‘Green Lantern Corps’ Co-Writer David S. Goyer Might Get to Direct It Too
While DC and Warner Bros. continue to fiddle around with their upcoming movie slate, there are still a few that lack directors. To fix this problem, at least for one of their movies, David S. Goyer, who is one of the co-writers of the Green Lantern Corps movie, might also be tasked with directing it.
Get Ready for a ‘Venom’ Movie From Sony Coming Fall 2018
Sony’s Spideyverse is expanding. After negotiating for joint custody of Peter Parker with Marvel-Disney, the studio started planning a Venom spinoff, which today Sony is fast-tracking to an October 2018 release date.
James Gunn Says ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is Coming, ‘For Sure’
We haven’t even gotten to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 yet, and James Gunn is already hyping us up for the next one. Yes, there will be a Vol. 3, he promises, it’s just a matter of when and figuring out what kind of story to tell.
‘Legend of Tarzan’ Scribe Adam Cozad Will Pen ‘Suicide Squad 2’ Script
While it doesn’t look like Mel Gibson will direct Suicide Squad 2 since we haven’t heard anything from him in a while (although who really knows these days), the movie does now have a screenwriter. Warner Bros. is kicking off production on the movie with Adam Cozad, who wrote 2016’s The Legend of Tarzan for the studio and has officially signed on to the Suicide Squad sequel.
James Mangold Explains the Weird Reason Caliban Was in Both ‘Logan’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
Fans of X-Men who saw the latest two movies — Logan and last summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse — probably noticed something kinda weird about one recurring character. Despite offering no continuity or explanation as to why it happened this way, the mutant Caliban showed up in both, in Logan played by Stephen Merchant, and in Apocalypse by Thomas Lemarquis. Despite a bit of an accent on Lemarquis’ part, they both looked mostly the same: albino, weird eyes, bald. There was just a weird lack of continuity, and James Mangold recently explained why.
Catch a Glimpse of the Megazord in the New ‘Power Rangers’ TV Spot
So far, the new Power Rangers movie has unleashed nine (9) whole TV spots upon us that, all together, pretty much allow us to piece together the entire plot of the movie. Five kids somehow get glowing coins, stumble upon a spaceship that grows colorful suits on their bodies, and then Rita Repulsa shows up with her magic staff to wreak havoc on their small town of Angel Grove. These teens will have to acclimate to their new superpowers, learn how to drive their prehistoric creature-shaped Zords, and save the world, all while trying to survive high school!
James Mangold Cut a ‘Powerful’ Jean Grey Scene from ‘Logan’
When you learn about writing, there’s one mantra that you’ll hear over and over: Kill your darlings. Sometimes, the only way to make a scene in a book or a paragraph in an article work best is to take out the part of it you love the most, just because hanging onto it isn’t worth the clunkiness it creates. The same is true for film, and oftentimes directors will have to take out really great scenes because they don’t work with the flow of the rest of the movie. Logan is pretty seamlessly put together, but even James Mangold ran into that problem once or twice. He revealed that there was a tribute to Wolverine’s fellow X-Man Jean Grey in the middle of the movie that he had to cut for story reasons. [Some SPOILERS follow for Logan, so if you haven’t seen it yet, run far away.
Taika Waititi Says He Was Inspired by ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
It’s been a great week for those of us who are really excited for Thor: Ragnarok: between Thor’s new #look, and Jeff Goldblum’s… everything, this movie might be the most entertaining, visuals-wise, Marvel has ever made. And it also might be among the funniest: it’s described as a kind of buddy road trip comedy with Thor and Bruce Banner/Hulk traveling the Universe and stirring up trouble, and Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo historically have some of the funniest moments in the previous Avengers films (“Another!”/“Puny god.”). Couple that with New Zealand’s achingly hysterical Taika Waititi, and you’ve got a pretty potent combo.
