‘Age Of Ultron': Marvel Announce Title For Their Next Avengers Film, Debut Footage From ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ [SDCC 2013]

Marvel Entertainment closed out day three of Comic-Con with their highly anticipated 'Marvel Studios: Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.' Hosted by Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige, the panel started out with Tom Hiddleston coming out and going into his Loki character to entertain the crowd, was followed by the cast of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film joining Feige on stage as they debuted footage from the film, and closed out with Joss Whedon coming out to make Marvel's biggest announcement of this year's SDCC: the sequel to last year's phenomenally successful Avengers film will be titled Avengers: Age of Ultron, meaning the villain will be the powerful android with close ties to the Avengers who's tormented the team for decades.

While the Age of Ultron news may have been the biggest to come out, there was much going on to please the delighted audience packed into Hall H. To kick off the hour, Feige brought Hiddleston out, who went into full on Loki mode before introducing footage from Thor: The Dark World:

After he left the stage, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansonn, Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson came on to talk about Captain America: The Winter Soldier and introduce footage from that film, which Johansonn described as "gritty."

Next up was the cast of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, David Bautista, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan (who is bald for the role of Nebula, according to Marvel Executive Editorial Director Ryan Penagos), Djimon Hounsou, Michael Booker and director James Gunn came on, having left filming in to be with Feige as they showed the first footage from the film.

And finally, Avengers director Joss Whedon came on stage, and announced Avengers: Age of Ultron as the title of the sequel to the wildly successful first film. Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema in 1968, Ultron is a powerful Artificial Intelligence invented by Henry Pym a.k.a Ant-Man, one of the original Avengers. After accidentally gaining sentience, Ultron became one of the Avengers greatest foes. Possessing near limitless strength, endurance and energy projection, Ultron's appearances in the comics are always a major event, and the character has several "familial" ties to the Avengers in the comics continuity. Having been created by Pym, he often refers to him as a father of sorts. Additionally, he would later go on to create Vision, using the brain patterns of another Avenger, Wonder Man.

In the past year, Marvel published a miniseries titled Age of Ultron, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Bryan Hitch, but there is as yet no word on whether that storyline will be reflected in the upcoming film.

Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives in theaters in 2015.
