Longtime Marvel editor Axel Alonso has been promoted to Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Entertainment, the company announced today. Alonso previously held the position of Vice President, Executive Editor and presided over much of the publishing house's major works over the last ten years, including the X-Men line, the Deadpool titles and the mature readers MAX imprint. Outgoing Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, who had served at the post for a decade, will remain Marvel's Chief Creative Officer, overseeing the company's operations in film, television and other extra-comics media.

Alonso came to Marvel in 2000 after a very successful tenure at Vertigo, where he edited such memorable books as Preacher, 100 Bullets, 20/20 Visions, Flex Mentallo, and the anthologies Weird War Tales, Weird Western Tales and Gangland. At Marvel, he edited X-Statix and J. Michael Straczynski's work on The Amazing Spider-Man.

"Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EiCs in comics history and I'm honored to step into this role," said Axel Alonso. "I've been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you'll find in any medium. This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I've never encountered before, but I know one thing-Marvel's getting even bigger in 2011."

For his part, Quesada can take credit for revitalizing Marvel after a period of stagnation and danger, ultimately positioning the company for acquisition by Disney. Alonso was instrumental to many of Quesada's strategies, and the transition would appear to be only natural as Quesada shifts to other responsibilities.
