Marvel Comics announced on Saturday the coming of Brilliant, a new creator-owned series written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Mark Bagley. On sale in July and hyped as "More Social Network than Avengers," the series follows a group of young geniuses who endeavor to discover whether superpowers could exist in real life. Brilliant reunites Bendis and Bagley, who together created Ultimate Spider-Man, a perennial hit for Marvel that's sold over one million copies.Announced at Marvel's "Cup O' Joe" panel at C2E2 in Chicago, Brilliant is designed to appeal to readers of not just Bendis' existing creator-owned work like Powers and Scarlet, but also the superhero fans of Ultimate Spider-Man.

Brilliant tells the story of a handful of college age geniuses that challenge each other to solve the mystery of superpowers. Can a handful of the best and brightest change science fiction into science fact? And if they are able to how will the world at large react?

Brilliant is more "The Social Network" than "Avengers", more "The Firm" than "Spider-Man." It is a story of personal and corporate intrigue. It is a thriller of the highest order. It is a story of how true power can either destroy or protect the strongest of friendships. It is the story of how the world will react when our true potential is finally unlocked.

Brilliant will ship in July of this year from Marvel's Icon imprint.
