The rumors have been flying for months, but now Captain Marvel herself will take to the skies.

The latest member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first female hero to headline her own solo Marvel movie, will be Captain Marvel. At Comic-Con 2016 in San Diego, Marvel’s Kevin Feige formally introduced Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning star of Room, as the woman to play Carol Danvers onscreen.

The film has a new logo as well:

And here’s how Brie Larson celebrated the news:

Carol Danvers has a long and storied history in the comic book Marvel Universe. She first got her powers in the pages of a different Captain Marvel’s comic; the first (male) hero to carry that name, who was an alien warrior who came to Earth and became one of its champions. Danvers later adopted the name Ms. Marvel, and became a hero in her own right, though she later lost most of her powers in a battle with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. (Her powers were absorbed by Rogue, but we won’t be seeing her in a Captain Marvel movie anytime soon.) Many years and several more superhero identities later, a re-powered Carol Danvers finally claimed the Captain Marvel name for her own; in the last couple years she’s become an increasingly central figure in Marvel Comics. She’s currently one of the anchors of Marvel’s big summer event, Civil War II.

How central the MCU’s Carol Danvers will be remains up in the air. But Brie Larson is an amazing young actress. It’s hard to imagine a better choice for the part. Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8, 2019.
