Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving communities of costuming that exist, such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. Over the years, the cosplay community has evolved into a creative outlet for many fans to establish and showcase some impressive feats of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics at conventions. The Sailor Moon Girl Gang Cosplay Group Fights Evil By Daylight

SM01

If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that the two most influential creators of female characters in the 20th century were Sailor Moon's Naoko Takeuchi and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! director Russ Meyer. So really, it was only a matter of time before those two aesthetics combined, and when artist Babs Tarr finally drew the Sailor Scouts as a bosozoku gang (a Japanese term for biker gangs that literally translates as "violent running tribe," which is amazing), it was every bit as great as we all wanted it to be.

Now, we have seen the next step: A group of incredible cosplayers made up of Michelle Nguyen, Mandie Bettencourt, Ruby Rocket, Yume Ninja and Jennifer Newman have brought the violent, bike riding take on Sailor Moon to life.

The Most Euphoric Cosplay Footage You Will See This Year [Video]

Untitled-1

While cosplayers are present at virtually every major convention celebrating comics, gaming, fantasy and science fiction, it's Atlanta's Dragon*Con that has become a a kind of Mecca to which most of the scene's most dedicated hobbyists and professionals pilgrimage every year. Lately I've been comparing the cosplay phenomena to that of b-boying, where the primary inspiration is expressing creativity, performing and earning props from other people like you. The dance comparison is made explicit in this jubilant new video that conveys in a simple but really emotional way just how much fun the Dragon*Con cosplayers are having without us.

Comics Alliance Reviews SyFy’s ‘Heroes of Cosplay’ [Video]

Untitled-6

Heroes of Cosplay
is a docu-series that follows nine cosplayers (Yaya Han, Riki LeCotey, Monika Lee, Victoria Schmidt, Chloe Dykstra, Jessica Merizan, Holly Conrad, Becky Young, and Jesse Lagers) as they work on intricate, ambitious costumes and travel to compete in costume contests at conventions all around the United States. The show is the cosplay community's most visible representation in the national media so far. Unfortunately, Heroes of Cosplay has garnered a fair amount of criticism from within and outside the fandom, from speculations of "fixed" costume contests to possible copyright infringement of cosplay photography.

As the curator of ComicsAlliance's weekly Best Cosplay Ever feature and a cosplayer myself, I've been approached for my thoughts on the show and its depiction of my community. With three of Heroes of Cosplay's six-episode run now out there for all to see (you can watch them on SyFy's YouTube channel if you missed them), CA Editor and reality TV obsessive Andy Khouri joined me for a discussion about the controversial show, the current state of cosplay fandom, and the nature of geek-centric reality television.
