Exquisite Corpse: The Best 'Hellboy' Short Is A Perfect Comic
Hellboy: The Corpse is a perfect comic book. Originally published in two-page installments back in 1995, it's of the best stories in Mike Mignola's considerable catalogue, and still stands over 20 years later as the single greatest Hellboy short. It's a great introduction to Hellboy and his world, action packed and full of a moody atmosphere that's spooky without being scary, built on the foundation of half-remembered folktales and Jack Kirby monster comics; but more than that, it's an incredible example of craftsmanship and accessibility. And it all starts with Hellboy fighting a baby.

My Favorite Monster: Go Big Or Go Home With The Ogdru Jahad
When thinking about favorite monsters, I wanted to go to one of the biggest, most uncontrollable and terrifying concepts that have ever hit the comics page. Dinosaurs and demons are all well and good, but they offer a threat that doesn’t dig deep beneath the skin. What really frightens me is unknown, unseen terror that exists in fugue; horrors like the Ogdru Jahad, creatures we've seen only briefly in Mike Mignola-created books including Hellboy and B.P.R.D..

It's Fantasy Week here at ComicsAlliance, and it's also one week until Halloween, so what better way to celebrate both than with a look at an anime and manga about a young shrine maiden waging a war on monsters. This is Blood-C, a spinoff of a spinoff of a movie that got its own movie!

Dark Horse Unveils Toni Fejzula's Sketches For 'Dead Inside'
John Arcudi and Toni Fejzula's upcoming Dark Horse series Dead Inside is the best kind of murder mystery, a locked room murder mystery. To make things even more interesting, it's a locked room murder mystery that takes place inside a county jail, and the guards don't care if the inmates live or die. Ahead of the release of Dead Inside, we've got an exclusive look at Fejzula's black and white character sketches of the characters and convicts of the Mariposa County jail.

The question most often asked of the ComicsAlliance staff is a variation of, “Which comic books should I be reading?” or, “I’m new to comics, what’s a good place to start?” The Wednesday deluge of new comic books, graphic novels and collected editions can be daunting even for the longtime reader, much less for those totally unfamiliar with creators, characters and publishers, and the dark mysteries of comic book shopping like variants, pre-ordering, and formats. It’s with these challenges in mind that we’ve created Best Comic Books Ever (This Week), an ongoing guide curated by the ComicsAlliance staff. This is where new comics readers and seasoned Wednesday shoppers alike can find our picks of the best books the medium has to offer.
