The new blockbuster Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is in cinemas now, and surprisingly it patches the flaws from its predecessor and ramps up the ridiculousness in a way that makes it an enjoyable family superhero film for the summer. The Turtles have been mainstays of film, TV and video games for decades, but their origins go way back to the black and white independent comics boom of the '80s. If you’re a fan of Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, odds are you’re already keeping up with IDW’s excellent ground-up re-imagining of the franchise, but if you want more in that vein, we’ve selected five of the best independent, creator-owned, or alternative licensed comics that live up to the spirit of Turtle Power!

Dynamite declared today “Dynamite Day 2016,” announcing several new comics featuring some of its best-known licenses. The four new titles celebrate anniversaries, collect some spectacular art, and in one case endorses a new presidential candidate who, in all honesty, seems like a pretty fair shout right now. The biggest announcement is perhaps the new Battlestar Galactica series, written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by Alex Sanchez, set during the time of the original series. The book marks Bunn’s first ongoing series with Dynamite, while Sanchez was seen recently on books like Katana over at DC.

What a week! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to sit back and read some comics. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I grew up in the '80s and '90s, but I've always been fascinated by video game box art, especially in the era when the graphics on the screen were a little more than vague pixel shapes. Seeing those concepts translated to those lush, pulp novel paintings that were meant to convey what you were supposed to be seeing and spark your imagination to let you believe that a little triangle was actually a spaceship fighting desperately against hordes of aliens? That's pretty cool. And now, we're getting a chance to revisit some of the most iconic pieces of art from that generation of games. Today at Emerald City ComiCon, Dynamite announced Robert V. Conte and Tim Lapetino's The Art of Atari, a hardcover collection that comes in at over 350 pages, going deep into the art of an era.

One Garth Ennis comic adaptation for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg simply wasn’t enough, and now the duo are at it again. Following initial development, the two will next direct and produce an adaptation of Ennis’ superhero-policing The Boys at Cinemax, written by a familiar name for Supernatural fans.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is in theaters worldwide right now, and whether you loved or hated it, it's certainly an interesting take on The Caped Crusader and The Man of Tomorrow. A great many independent comics have taken the core ideas of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other iconic characters and given them a unique spin that could only be explored outside the confines of DC Comics mainstream continuity.
