Best Comic Books Ever (This Week) – New Releases Guide For February 25, 2015

Best Comic Books Ever (This Week) - 2/25

The question most often asked of the ComicsAlliance staff is a variation of, "Which comic books should I be reading?" or, "I'm new to comics, what's a good place to start?"

Indeed, the Wednesday deluge of new comic books, graphic novels and collected editions can be daunting even for the longtime reader, much less the comics-curious totally unfamiliar with the creators, characters and publishers the industry has to offer, or the sometimes confusing system of periodicals, trades, crossovers, pre-ordering, variants, reprints, and all the other dark mysteries of comic book shopping.

It's with these challenges in mind that we've created Best Comic Books Ever (This Week), an ongoing guide curated by rotating members of the ComicsAlliance staff. This is where new comics readers will find the easiest access to the best variety of cool books our storytelling medium has to offer, and where seasoned Wednesday shoppers can find recommendations for new titles to try out.

Battleworld: Deciphering The Theme Park Map Of The Post-Marvel Universe Marvel Universe [UPDATED]

secret-wars-battleworld-hed

The Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe are coming to an end as realities collide in Marvel's 2015 event Secret Wars. Marvel has yet to reveal what shape its publishing line will take once the dust of that event has settled, but in the meantime the line is largely taken over by books set on "Battleworld," a Frankenstein planet of alternate realities all mushed together.

When first announced, Battleworld was an inscrutable mystery with only a few of the blanks filled in on Marvel.com's interactive map. We pieced together the clues from there, from the 'Battleworld Forged' video teaser that Marvel put out last year, and from Alex Ross's cover for Secret Wars #1, and added a few assumptions of our own to build a fuller picture. We've since updated our guide to Battleworld every time Marvel has updated the map or released a flurry of new announcements. Now our guide is almost complete. Check out the 'domains' — and the various Secret Wars titles — below.

Ten More Of The Best ‘Batman: Black & White’ Stories (So Far)

Bw11

If you're getting a sense of deja vu right now, that's because you actually have read this article before. Right before the latest volume of Batman: Black & White began back in 2013, ComicsAlliance published a list of the ten best stories in the celebrated anthology series. But the fourth volume was really, really good, and included some stories strong enough to be considered among the very best.

Making a new version of that same list with just a few replacements would be cheating you, and require me to read my own writing (ecch). So instead, we're just going to stick with the 'ten best' thing. Here are the highlights from the latest volume of Black & White, and a few that were barely edged out of the first list. Will there be another version of this article after the next volume? You bet your ass. We're gonna stay here until we get this right, people.

The 5 Most Insane Christmas Comics Of All Time

Untitled-1

Despite the fact that a good chunk of my floorspace is taken up with long boxes and bookshelves, I consider myself more of a "reader" than a "collector," except for two things I hoard shamelessly: Christmas comics and Abraham Lincoln appearances. If I see Santa Claus or our 16th President in a comic book, I buy it -- no questions asked.

And as a result, I've picked up my share of Christmas stories that are truly bizarre -- and considering this is a weird little sub-genre that routinely features stories about Ultron being reprogrammed to give out toys, Batman stopping all crime in Gotham City by singing "Joy to the World" with the GCPD choir, and a Jack Kirby tale entitled "Santa's War Against the Seal Men," that's saying something. So this year, I've rifled through the comics under my tree to bring you The Five Most Insane Christmas Comics of All Time!

10 Members of the Justice League of Christmas

Justice League Christmas

In a recent essay, I posited that rather than being the villain of Christmas as he is popularly understood, the furry demon known as the Krampus is actually the Batman of Christmas. This got me thinking: who would play which role if we were to build an entire Justice League of Christmas? If you are wondering, yes, this is what it's like inside my brain all the time. And so, I propose to you this roster for the JLXmas.
