ComicsAlliance Celebrates Blackhawktober!

While other sites may be content to bring you Rocktober, Shocktober or Mohawktober, ComicsAlliance is committed to commemorating the things that really matter! That’s why this month, we’re bringing you 31 days of the World War II flying ace without a country as we celebrate Blackhawktober!DID YOU KNOW…

  • Although he was originally created as an American, Blackhawk was later retconned as Janos Prohaska, a Polish pilot who formed a squadron of pilots and volunteers whose countries were either at war with, or had been conquered by, the Nazis, and who flew to get their bloodthirsty revenge. This is a pretty awesome concept.
  • In the mid-60s, Bob Haney wrote a story where the Justice League called the Blackhawks in and told them they were too old-fashioned for the realistic modern world of the Silver Age, and made them all adopt the worst superheroic identities ever. Blackhawk managed to hang onto “Blackhawk,” but poor Chuck was “The Listener,” who wore pajamas covered in ears.
  • There was a very bitter dispute between Blackhawk creators Will Eisner and Chuck Cuidera over who created which elements of the series. Well, except Chop-Chop. Eisner went ahead and let Cuidera claim that one all for himself, presumably because he had enough problems in his own work.

Join us tomorrow for more Blackhawktober celebrations!
