Update 6/22: Yeah, no, folks. As we suspected, The CW has officially refuted rumors that Ciara Renee’s Hawkgirl might front her own series after Legends of Tomorrow, at least for now. Also joining the chorus of overwhelming “duh” was Renee herself:

Original story follows.

Emboldened by their superhero success, The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow order made a surprising addition to both Arrow and The Flash, and the mad scientists of the network may push their experiment even further. Could Hawkgirl soon soar into her own series as well, after the Legends of Tomorrow arrive in 2016?

Take this one with a shared universe worth of salt, but reports are flying that The CW intends to spin Ciara Renee’s Kendra Saunders into her own Hawkgirl series, presumably at some point after Arrow / Flash spinoff Legends of Tomorrow features the character as a series regular in 2016. The Flash briefly introduced Renee’s character in a pickup shot from season finale “Fast Enough,” though it remains to be seen if either CW series will afford the character a more formal introduction before the Legends premiere.

Now, here’s where things get a bit, as the internet adores to say, “problematic.” Putting aside how ludicrous The CW would have to be to add a fourth superhero series (it was unusual enough to develop a third), Legends won’t start shooting its initial 15 episodes until later on this summer at the earliest, making it highly unlikely the network could already have considered developing a spinoff.

Compounding that, series regular Victor Garber previously testified that The CW more than likely intends to continue Legends beyond its first season, supplanting any suggestions that a Hawkgirl series might simply replace it. Moreover, SpoilerTV doesn’t exactly have a track record of breaking bankable news, nor does the report offer any actual specifics beyond a possible straight-to-series order, and an uncertain timeframe against the character’s Legends of Tomorrow role.

Premiering likely in January of 2016, so reads the Legends of Tomorrow description:

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat – one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?

Thus far, we know the series to include Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Jay Jackson (Franz Drameh), Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Caity Lotz, and time-traveler Rip Hunter (Doctor Who alum Arthur Darvill).

Legends of Tomorrow will debut plenty of new details (and potentially some footage) from DC’s Superhero Saturday panel at Comic-Con 2015, but could The CW already be planning another spinoff? How should it even handle a Hawkgirl series, should the insane rumor prove true?
