DC Comics and Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming MMORPG "DC Universe Online" has already employed the talents of Jim Lee and others to help craft a digital representation of the comic book world, but now the venture is turning to Facebook fans for their animation skills in a new contest.

Sony's teamed up with Mass Animation for a contest that gives fans a chance to collaborate in creating a CGI trailer and in-game character animations according to a recent press release.

The contest calls for Facebook users (you'll have to be registered for this link to work) to use the site's supplied tools including a version of Autodesk Maya 3D Animation software, storyboards, designs and fully-rigged 3-D models supplied through a special application.

Contestants can upload their entries to have them voted on via Facebook and a special iPhone app. Naturally, winners receive cash and prizes with the top entries actually incorporated into the game.

It's free labor for DC and a chance for fans to get a glimpse behind the development curtain for a chance to see their work in the game upon release. I'd day it's win-win...if I can figure out how any of this stuff works.
