Rachel Maddow, the MSNBC pundit who doubles as a graphic novel fan, invited French graphic novelist Emmanuel Guibert onto her show last Friday, where she described his new book, "The Photographer," as "one of the most amazing publications I've ever read."

The book, which you should buy immediately, is a hybrid work combining Guibert's art and the photography of Didier Lefevre, who traveled across Afghanistan alongside Doctors Without Borders in 1986, after the Soviet invasion. His tremendously powerful photos help document both the dangerous humanitarian mission of the doctors he traveled with, and a war that few journalists were there to witness.
