The new Fantastic Four trailer is here and after months of rumors and presumptions and, quite frankly, downright weird buzz, we are finally getting a clear look at what Josh Trank’s upcoming reboot really looks like. Unlike the previous trailer, which liberally quoted the advertising for Interstellar with its questions and about science and its shots of corn fields, this preview is a bit more traditional and a bit more action packed. Oh, we finally get to see The Thing in action.

This trailer nails down one thing that we already knew: this version of the film will draw heavily from the “Ultimate” edition of Marvel’s First family. Reed Richards (Miles Teller), Sue Storm (Kate Mara), Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) are much younger than their previous cinematic incarnations and they gain their powers by traveling to another dimension, not by journeying into space. The bulk of the trailer focuses on the characters in laboratory settings, engaging in conversations about using their powers for good, but there a few cool action shots. The highlights include Ben leaping from an airplane and crushing a Humvee with his indestructible body, Sue using her force field powers to throw a bunch of cargo containers, and the briefest possible shot of Reed using his stretching abilities (an effect that no previous superhero film has managed to nail quite yet).

The trailer also gives us our first glimpse at Toby Kebbell’s Doctor Doom, who has been re-imagined as a genius hacker, but it’s not enough to truly judge. At least the mask looks better here than it did in those set photos that leaked online.

The one thing we can say for sure is that Fantastic Four certainly looks like it’s from the director of Chronicle. It’s full of angst and disquieting visuals and the whole thing seems awfully grim (no pun intended) for a movie about a quartet of goofy superheroes. Then again, the sillier versions from a decade ago didn’t work at all. At the very least, Trank seems to be swinging for the fences with this one. Let’s hope it’s a home run.

Fantastic Four hits theaters on August 7, 2015.
