BB-8, the adorable soccer ball droid from the upcoming life-changing mega-blockbuster Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, has been reproduced in gold and diamonds by Kay Jewelers. This little droid is only 4.25 inches tall, but it's worth $135,000 according to appraisal. That's because it's made of 18-carat gold and festooned with 18 carats of diamonds (which is apparently about 860 actual rocks).

This may look like the sort of thing you'd give as a gift to a medieval king or capitalist overlord, but it's encouraging to know it's actually being auctioned off for charity, with the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. So it will almost certainly be a gift for a capitalist overlord (quite possibly from his favorite person; himself), but at least the money spent on it will help sick children.

Still, doesn't BB-8 look like one of those intricate gold balls that medieval kings hold in one hand in old paintings and tarot cards? I don't know what you call those, but from now on I'm going to suspect that they're time-displaced gold droids.

There's a short video of the painstaking work that went into hand-crafting of this tiny expensive robot. I was going to say that if this much effort and money is put into a BB-8 model, it really out to roll around on its own and talk to you. But then I remembered that there are already BB-8 models for sale that do exactly that, and they don't even cost anywhere near as much as this one does. What a world we live in.
