While reviews for Captain America: Civil War were not quite as unanimous as past entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was one thing we could all agree on: Sony Pictures was very, very smart to let Marvel take a crack at shaping the next series of Spider-Man movies. Not to be outdone, rumors have emerged that 20th Century Fox might have similar plans for their X-Men characters.

In the most recent episode of Collider Heroes (via /Film), Fatman on Batman podcast producer Matt Key shared a few of the whispers and rumors he’s been hearing about the possibility of a mutant and superhero team-up.

I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds, that Fox and Marvel have… kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe…’ We’re years away from that ever possibly happening… but I think that’s what it would take… Fox joining hands with Marvel…

Now, feel free to take that with a tremendous and justifiable grain of salt, but fans of Marvel comics have always lamented the fact that licensing agreements kept some of our favorite comic book crossovers (Spider-Man and Wolverine! The Hulk and Colossus!) from becoming a reality. If Marvel and Fox are indeed finding a common ground, this can only mean bigger and better things for the MCU.

As for possible storylines, since Marvel Entertainment has skewed towards recent comic book plots in their film adaptations, one possible outcome could be the 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event. This would allow Fox to pay off its Phoenix tease from the recent X-Men: Apocalypse and continue to grow Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff as a major force in the Avengers universe. Then again, a hypothetical Marvel / Fox crossover might also be pushed so far into the future that few of the original cast members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Bryan Singer’s X-Men series will still be around. We could be looking at a brand new playing field of superheroes by then, or a rebooted franchise of original characters. Who knows! Ain’t speculation grand?
