Another week, another quick update from James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The film isn’t set to hit theaters until 2017, but the director is still offering up plot tidbits and hints as he works on completing the screenplay. One of the big mysteries (perhaps the biggest) in Guardians of the Galaxy was the identity of Star-Lord’s father, and as Gunn previously teased, we’ll definitely meet him in the sequel — but is he the only father figure involved?

In a new interview with Vulture, Gunn further teased the reveal of Star-Lord’s dad:

At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.

Note that he says “fathers” plural. With Karen Gillan’s Nebula returning, it’s fair to assume that the sequel will continue to explore the relationship between the genetically-modified alien and her father. It would be neat to find out more about where Nebula and Gamora originally came from before Thanos snatched them up and set about modifying them, though, which would also play into the film’s familial themes.

Gunn went on to reveal that he’s already cracked the story for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, should he remain involved:

I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be, and the third one!

A third Guardians of the Galaxy film hasn’t been announced just yet, but if things continue to go well in the MCU, another installment doesn’t seem far-fetched at all. The contract with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige expires in 2018–2019, and the only thing potentially stopping a third Guardians film would probably be his exit, but it’s hard to believe Marvel would let the man who guided this entire MCU enterprise go so easily.
