Watch Hugh Jackman’s Reaction When He Learns About the Marvel and Spider-Man Deal
We spoke to Hugh Jackman earlier today for his upcoming movie Chappie (we’ll have much more on that movie over at ScreenCrush soon), and as we were making small talk, we asked Mr. Jackman whether he had heard the news yet about Marvel and Sony Pictures coming to terms on an agreement that would allow Spider-Man to crossover into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He had not. And, he was very surprised.
It was only a few hours after the news had broken and we were Jackman's first interview of the day, so no one had gotten to him yet to explain the big news (even though this was at a Sony Pictures event). He seemed very surprised, as we all were, that it actually happened. We asked what, if anything, this meant to the possibility of Wolverine ever making an appearance in a Marvel Studios movie.
Jackman has been one of the most outspoken stars when it comes to trying to create a unified Marvel universe. He spoke in 2013 about his desire to battle Iron Man in an upcoming movie. He said at the time, “I actually just asked the other day, I said, ‘I don't know what the legal situation is, but why don't these companies come together? Why isn't it possible?’ Because personally, I would love to mix it up with Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man and kick his ass. It'd be great.”
Obviously the relationship between Fox and Marvel is a lot different than the relationship between Sony and Marvel, who've maintained an amiable relationship. On the other hand, Marvel recently canceled all Fantastic Four comics to spite the upcoming reboot, which doesn't sound like the start of a positive working relationship.
