The new Star Trek universe established in J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie relaunch will continue to flesh itself out this September with the release of Star Trek #1 from IDW.

Working under Star Trek movie co-writer Roberto Orci, writer Mike Johnson and artist Stephen Molnar will be creating fresh tales from classic TV lore and more. According to IDW's press release, the first story will be "a dramatic new envisioning of The Original Series second pilot, 'Where No Man Has Gone Before.'"

Johnson and Molnar are Trek comic veterans, having worked on multiple projects at IDW. The official Star Trek movie adaptation and prelude comics Nero and Countdown were written by Johnson, while Molnar illustrated the five-issue Mission's End miniseries back in 2009.

Tim Bradstreet and David Messina will be illustrating covers for Star Trek #1, but fans who dig photo covers will also have a few options when the book arrives this fall. From IDW's official press release:

The Star Trek universe will never be the same following the events of the game-changing, blockbuster 2009 film. Beginning with STAR TREK #1 in September, IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products join forces with Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci to explore the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the film in a new, monthly, ongoing comics series.

"Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money," said Orci. "But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been. Join us!"
