Aside from giving the players the power to step into the shoes of their favorite heroes and beat the snot out of each other, Injustice 2 also has an actual ongoing narrative at its core. That's not an uncommon thing in fighting games, but it is rare for stories to be more than flimsy excuses for characters to match up against one another. With its newest trailer, we get a bit of a better look at what's going on in the fighting game sequel, who stands with who, and which characters from Injustice are returning.

The first "Shattered Alliances" trailer offered but a glimpse at the many twists and turns the Injustice story will be taking this May. This latest spin through the alternate DC Universe shows that Superman knows whatever lurks at the heart of Injustice 2's story is too much for Batman to handle alone; he'll need the Regime. Cyborg shows up again, but so do other returning characters in new duds Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Bane. The action is brief, but there are some glimpses at the powers GL and GA will use in-game. Bane sadly gets the silent treatment.

Though you don't get to see him in action anywhere in the trailer, Captain Cold appears to be on Gorilla Grodd's team, alongside villainous luminaries like Catwoman, Cheetah, Bane and Deadshot. Reverse Flash is in the trailer too, but we already know that he's going to be an alternate skin for Flash rather than a separate playable character.

Additionally, NetherRealm released another piece of the game's key art, this time adding a second part of the massive brawl with Batman at the center. The right side clearly connects with the Superman one shown off during the last trailer, and it looks like Wonder Woman will provide the focus on the next installment. Hopefully this massive piece of art won't merely be relegated to screenshots on the web, and get a nice physical release somewhere.

Injustice 2 will be out on May 16 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
