More auspicious casting news from the world of Gotham. Following the well received decision to give Donal Logue the role of dubious Detective Harvey Bullock, Warner Bros. has announced that Jada Pinkett Smith will appear in the series based on the Batman comic books published by DC Comics. Smith will portray a new character called Fish Mooney, who in the series' mythology is meant to be the ruthless boss of the man who Batman fans know will one day become the Penguin.

A WB press release describe's Smith's Mooney character as "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney's got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book," and that she's Oswald Cobblepot's superior.

As previously reported, Gotham is a prequel of sorts to the popular Batman mythos, focusing on a young James Gordon depicted by Ben McKenzie. The series will also star Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Sarah Essen, and Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean.

Smith previously appeared in The Matrix Reloaded, Collateral and the TV medical drama Hawthorne.
