The acclaimed graphic novel series March is being developed as an animated TV series by Charleston Immersive & Interactive Media Studio, according to an announcement by that company. March is the autobiographical story of Congressman and longtime activist John Lewis and his lifelong involvement in the Civil Rights movement. It's written by Lewis and Andrew Aydin with art by Nate Powell.

March: Book Two was recently nominated for three Eisner Awards: Best Publication for Teens, Best Reality-Based Work, and a Best Penciller/Inker nomination for Nate Powell.

As the series has just been optioned for development, there is no news about when and where it might one day air, but given the comic's acclaim it seems likely to find a home somewhere. CI2 is currently looking for creatives to contribute to the project, as well as a some interactive educational products set during the graphic novels.

Here's more from the official announcement:

“It is my hope that this project inspires another generation of young people to learn the way of peace, the way of love, the way of nonviolence,” said Congressman John Lewis. Co-author Andrew Aydin added: “I'm honored and excited to see MARCH grow in this new way.” And Nate Powell, whose Book Two illustrations were recognized with an Eisner nomination, said: "A universal chord rings true at the heart of MARCH — young people working to shape the very fabric of our society, on their own terms."

MARCH: Book One was published in 2013 to critical acclaim, rising to become a #1 New York Times best seller and recipient of a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. The Washington Postcalled it “a riveting and beautiful civil-rights story… Lewis's gripping memoir should be stocked in every school and shelved at every library.” Book Two was praised by School Library Journal: “This insider’s view of the civil rights movement should be required reading for young and old; not to be missed.” Book Three is scheduled to be published in August 2016.
