John Ridley’s Marvel TV Series Still in Development, Whatever It Is

As Marvel gears up to shoot the pilot of its Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Most Wanted, there’s been significantly less movement around American Crime head John Ridley’s top-secret Marvel TV series. Ridley himself confirms that the series remains in development, though we’re no closer to learning what it actually is.

Presenting American Crime at the TCA press tour, Ridley said of the project (h/t IGN) “The Marvel project is still very much alive.” Without revealing its content, the writer-producer also tipped his hand toward making the series both “socially conscious” and “straight entertainment”:

You look at Jessica Jones, and [Marvel’s] doing an interesting job of integrating [social consciousness]. I would say in general, graphic novels, their reason for existence is a little different. It’s about wish fulfillment, whether you’re talking about Peter Parker, a young, misunderstood kid trying to figure out his way; if you’re talking about Bruce Wayne, a man who’s dealing with the loss of his parents; whether you’re talking about Clark Kent, an orphan who’s trying to figure out what he’s meant to do without the guidance of his parents.

That’s not unusual for the graphic novel space, so I would just say I hope that I would bring an appropriate amount of reflective sensibility to whatever project I may or may not be involved with in the Marvel universe. But I do want it to be entertaining in its own right.

When last we heard, Ridley’s project was said to involve “reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property for ABC,” while rumors placed the subject matter at everything from Ms. Marvel to Cloak and Dagger, but no reliable reports have emerged.

One wonders what Marvel might be taking its time with, but will John Ridley finally get to take a crack at the MCU?
