With Archie and Jughead already established as hits and Betty & Veronica back on the schedule for next month, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the ongoing Archie Comics reboot got to one of the most hotly anticipated relaunches in the history of the company: Josie and the Pussycats. Now, it's finally happening.

In September, Josie, Valerie and Melody will return to their own series for the first time since 1994 with an all-new Josie and the Pussycats #1, written by Marguerite Bennett and Cameron DeOrdio, with art by Audrey Mok and variant covers by Veronica Fish and Francesco Francavilla.

Per the announcement at Entertainment Weekly, the classic characters will undergo a few changes. Rather than being the twin sister of their manager, for instance, Alexandra Cabot will now be their manager's daughter --- which is understandable when you consider that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the Pussycats to achieve worldwide fame while being managed by a second-rate Reggie Mantle.

As for whether Alexandra will have magical powers that are activated by her sapient cat, that remains to be seen. One would assume that all the spooky stuff is now in the provenance of the Archie Horror line rather than the mainstream titles, but with Sabrina the Teenage Witch returning in the pages of Jughead in a few months, there's really no way of telling.

Bennett, of course, will likely be best known to readers for her work on DC's fantastic Bombshells title, while Mok has been working on the webcomic Heroine Chic and has previously provided a few variant covers for Archie. DeOrdio is a bit more of an unknown quantity in terms of comics, but this is certainly good company in which to make one's debut

Josie and the Pussycats #1 makes its debut on September 28.
