Kotobukiya’s Amazing Spider-Man Does Whatever a Statue Can
Following in the footsteps of Kotobukiya's Marvel Now Avengers and Marvel Now X-Men ArtFX+ statue series, the Japanese company will introduce an Amazing Spider-Man line. The upcoming statue set was actually teased at Toy Fair earlier this year, but there wasn't much to go on beyond knowing it was in the works. This week, Kotobukiya not only unveiled the first statue in the set, but also the concept art for the entire wave.
Designed by Stefano Casali, the Amazing Spider-Man ArtFX+ series will include Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, Venom, Carnage and Agent Venom. Like the other sets, the statues will be designed to fit together on display, though they can all stand on their own if you want. That the line is missing Spider-Woman and Silk isn't all that surprising, as typically the ArtFX+ lines like this have been limited to just seven pieces in total. Seeing Miles included in the set along with Spider-Gwen is still nice, and a great acknowledgement of their contributions to the Spider-legacy.
Spider-Man being first out of the gate shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but just because we're in a bit of Spider-merch overload at the moment doesn't take anything away from this solid work of art. Casali's designs for the set are impressive, if a bit predictable. I wish the physical products maintained a bit more of that unique painterly style in the colorway, but I also understand the desire to stick more to the traditional versions for a retail product like this.
The statues are all sculpted by Junnosuke Abe, who previously crafted Adi Granov's Avengers and X-Men for Koto, and he captures the art in 3D quite well. You get a real feel for Spider-Man's agility and flexibility, as well as his lean muscularity. There are some nice little details in there too, like the web shooter jutting out of his wrist and his boots having soles. I wish the head sculpt had more facial detail for the profile --- it always bothered me that Spider-Man looked like he had no nose from the side on figures and statues --- but other than that, there's little to take issue with here.
The Amazing Spider-Man ArtFX+ statue is available for pre-order now for $59.99, and is expected to arrive in December.
