Lego DC Super Hero Girls Sets: Peek Inside Wonder Woman’s Dorm, Fly Around With Bumblebee and More [NYCC 2016]

The DC Super Hero Girls debuted more than a year ago, but to this point, the rollout of tie-in merchandise has been incredibly calculated. Mattel's action dolls, the flagship figures for DC Super Hero Girls, have only been in wide circulation for a few months after a soft launch of exclusivity at Target. For what it's worth, the line has apparently been a success. It's hard to find the figures anywhere.

Hopefully fans will have better luck this winter when Lego kicks off its part of the DC Super Hero Girls partnership with a number of building sets set in that universe. The first wave of Lego DC Super Hero Girls sets is due out this November, but today Lego has announced the second batch, which will hit stores in January of next year.

All three of January's sets are smaller builds, which each come with one character, a vehicle, and diorama elements. Wonder Woman gets her own set, which shows off her dorm room, as well as her invisible motorcycle. She already has an invisible jet toy in the action doll line, but this motorcycle twist is a solid idea for a smaller collection. It's also a nice hat tip to the Gotham City Garage Wonder Woman statue from DC Collectibles. Or it's some fortunate brand alignment.

Bumblebee also stars in her own set, which comes with a helicopter and some Kryptomites --- which are apparently sentient bits of Kryptonite with personalities. I'm not quite sure why Bumblebee has a helicopter, since she can already fly on her own, but I do like the bubble cockpit design, and the twin rotors give it a bit more flair than a traditional chopper.

Lashina is making her DC Super Hero Girls debut in her set, which comes with a small tank. That's appropriately Apokolyptian. Krypto is also included for... reasons... as is his dog house, which comes complete with a catapult to fend off alien threats, but doubles as an instant fetch machine. Different Kryptomites are included here as well. You could probably build a Kryptomite army with all the variations in these three sets. It's almost like the Kryptomites might have some part to play in a future DC Super Hero Girls storyline. Hmmmm.

It should be noted, the DC Super Hero Girls Lego sets are all built into the Lego Friends series. That means the minifigs aren't built from the same mold as more traditional sets, even if all the parts and pieces of the actual sets are in that traditional Lego style. The Friends branch has its advantages --- such as exclusive licenses for Disney Princesses and now DC Super Hero Girls --- but there's no really good reason these DC Super Hero Girls sets had to be separated from the core Lego line.
