Clearly, miniature versions of your favorite superheroes are the new big thing (Something tells me that Alanis Morrisette would enjoy that "irony"). Close on the heels of Marvel's release of A-Babies Vs. X-Babies last week, DC launches Batman: Li'l Gotham, a new holiday-themed take on the Dark Knight and his world for those who just need a little helping of cute alongside their rodent-themed crime fighting. Naturally, it's just in time for Halloween. The digital series comes from creator Dustin Nguyen and co-writer Derek Fridolfs, and is based on the superdeformed and inescapably cute versions of the Batman cast that he's been doing for some time. "This has been a passion project of mine for some time now, and for anyone that's followed my work, I'm sure it's more of an 'its about time!'" Nguyen told the DC Comics blog The Source. "The look and style is a slight departure from my usual (think the exact opposite of serious), but the idea has always been the same -- to take our favorite existing Gotham characters, place them in fun scenarios without having to be tied to just one continuity or look and feel. It's basically a Batman book for fans, by two huge fans."

The series starts with a Hallowe'en-themed installment (appropriately), but expect to see other holidays reflected in upcoming issues, editor Sarah Gaydos explains. "Tying each story to that month's holiday gives us a really fun opportunity to play with the themes and traditions of each holiday. Dustin and Derek bring something special to each and every page. There are SO many 'Easter eggs,' so make sure to keep your eyes peeled!" (It would be too much to hope that Nguyen and Fridolfs could work in a Chris Sims-pleasing cameo from Jesse Custer, but the holidays are supposed to be a time for optimism and magic...)
