We at ComicsAlliance love comics, and we love music, so this week we’ve decided to combine those two loves and create playlist tributes to some of our favorite titles. Think of these as something to listen to while you read the comic, or an introduction to the vibe of a comic if you're not yet a fan.

Steve Orlando, Fernando Blanco and Romulo Fajardo Jr's Midnighter and Apollo straddles a sweet spot between being one of the most brutal and visceral superhero comics on the stands, and also one of the most tender and heartfelt romance stories. That intersection is exactly where my musical taste lies, so this playlist reflects these two beating hearts of the series.

Check out the track-by-track guide below, or listen along on the ComicsAlliance Spotify.

Please note some of these songs may not be safe to listen to in the workplace or in the presence of children!

  • I Wanna Boi

    PWR BTTM (Ugly Cherries)

While most of the songs on this mixtape relate to a specific character or moment in the series, I feel this first one is more of a thesis statement to set the tone. Midnighter and Apollo's relationship excels due to their light/dark dichotomy, and the key lyric here is, "I wanna boy who isn't anything like me."

  • I Punched A Lion In The Throat

Pulled Apart By Horses (Pulled Apart By Horses)

This was the first song I thought of when I started putting the playlist together. Not only does it perfectly sum up Midnighter's approach to superheroism — I think he may have actually punched a lion in the throat in his solo volume — but it sums up the creative team's approach to full throttle storytelling.

  • Can't Help Falling In Love

    Perfume Genius

While the couple is split for most of the miniseries, the first issue gives us a look at their domestic life, and this haunting cover of an old classic captures the tender love they have for each other when they hang up their costumes and settle in for the evening.

  • Two Weeks

    FKA Twigs (LP1)

I knew the playlist would need a song that exudes sex, and while the lyrics don't quite match up to Midnighter and Apollo as a couple — it's about convincing someone to cheat on their partner with you — the song oozes sexuality and makes the perfect soundtrack for their lovemaking in the first issue.

  • Strife

    Savages (Silence Yourself)

This is Apollo's song for the playlist, because he spends most of the miniseries in Hell, being tormented physically and emotionally by the devil himself. While usually a man of the sun, the strife he endures in Hell is captured tremendously by Savages.

  • Magick

Klaxons (Myths of the Near Future)

One of the big success stories of Midnighter and Apollo is the reinvention of Gregorio De La Vega, formerly known as Extraño. I knew he had to have some representation of this playlist, and I think this song works well to convey the utter confusion Midnighter has around Gregorio's magic, because while he can see it happen, his fight computer can't comprehend it.

  • Demons

    Sleigh Bells (Reign of Terror)

This is the counterpart to the Pulled Apart By Horses track from earlier, and another Midnighter song, this time soundtracking his arrival in Hell, and how quickly and brutally he cuts a swath through a horde of demons on his way to rescue the man he loves.

  • Gun

CHVRCHES (The Bones of What You Believe)

"Now, I'll be a gun, and it's you I'll come for"

Midnighter literally turns himself into a gun when he takes on The Mawzir, in possibly the most metal moment of 2016. It's a moment so awesome that it had to be represented on the playlist, and that one line in this CHRVCHES song was too perfect to ignore.
