DC properties have had a much easier time keeping afloat on TV than in theaters, but a Powerless comedy like NBC’s insurance-themed take could be something of a wild card. Nonetheless, we have our first Powerless star, now that Vanessa Hudgens has signed on for a lead role in the pilot.

The single-camera series is described as an Office-type comedy without any actual superheroes, set at “one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.”

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hudgens will play Emily Locke, an insurance claims adjuster “who loves her job because she gets to help people, Emily likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done. She finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city.”

A to Z alum Ben Queen will shepherd the series, executive producing with pilot director Michael Patrick Jann. Pilot production will commence with additional casting, but is Powerless off to a powerful start? Will we see it head-to-head with Marvel’s Damage Control?
