We often take it for granted that our most idiosyncratic artists want no part of the commercial side of Hollywood, but every now and then, someone comes along and changes our minds. Sometimes a filmmaker grew up on the same commercial movies that we all used to love; sometimes they just want to try their hand at working with big casts and even bigger budgets. And sometimes they just think it would be a blast.

Case in point, Nicolas Winding Refn. On Friday, the The Neon Demon director sat down with Business Insider (via Heroic Hollywood) to discuss his newest film and his plans for any upcoming projects. As is typical these days, the interviewer asked him about his interest in directing a superhero movie, and Refn made a somewhat surprising selection.

God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.

What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let's get Warner working on it.

As Business Insider notes, this is not the first time that Refn has been linked to a superhero property. Back in 2011, Refn expressed an interested in directing the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. And while audiences may scratch their heads at the thought of Refn’s cinematic style meshed with corporate Hollywood, several of his films — including The Neon Demon — do sort of operate as origin stories for their characters. Refn could potentially knock the idea of transformation and metamorphosis into a superhero out of the park…provided, of course, that he can find a studio willing to give him a shot.
