Jason Patric and Lucy Punch will star as Detectives Christian Walker and Denna Pilgrim in Powers, a new FX pilot based on the long running creator-owned superhero crime series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. Also featuring Charles S. Dutton as Captain Cross and 11-year-old Bailee Madison as Calista, the Powers pilot is directed by Michael Dinner (Justified, Sons of Anarchy) and written by Charles H. Eglee (The Walking Dead, The Shield).Rumored to be in development for years, news of the real and true Powers pilot finally came back in February, when it was announced that the show would come courtesy of some auspicious television talent, with contributors coming from shows like The Walking Dead, The Shield, Justified and Sons of Anarchy, all of which share a common tone with Bendis & Oeming's acclaimed ICON Comics title.

Jason Patric is an inspired choice to play the typically brooding, intense and enigmatic Detective Walker. Standout performances by Patric include Sleepers and Your Friends & Neighbors, and the actor also appeared in The Losers, based on the Vertigo comic book series. For her part, Lucy Punch appeared in Dinner for Schmucks, stars opposite Cameron Diaz in this weekend's Bad Teacher, and may have the only name cooler than Deena Pilgrim. The Powers pilot is expected to shoot later this summer.

One of my very favorite comic books, the Powers saga begins with veteran detective Christian Walker teaming up with rookie Deena Pilgrim to solve homicides in the "powers" division, an area of the police department dedicated especially to crimes involving superhuman criminals. Realized by Michael Avon Oeming and his colorist collaborators in a style you could arguably call hypercolor noir, Powers features a number of clever plots involving supervillains both archetypical and uniquely twisted. But the core of Powers is the carefully developed relationship between Walker and Pilgrim. As the story goes on, more is revealed about the deep mythology of the Powers universe and Walker's secret past.

Powers is available in 13 paperback collections from ICON Comics, as well as in oversized hardcover editions, all of which you can pick up at finer comic book shops, bookstores or online from Things From Another World.
