ShiftyLook Announces New Webcomics and Web Cartoons

ShiftyLook, the webcomic subsidiary of Namco Bandai that revives defunct video game characters like Bravoman, Dig Dug and Wonder Momo, unveiled its future plans at San Diego Comic-Con, introducing the world to three new webcomics and two brand-new web cartoons.

The new webcomic projects will launch over the next three months, with this month seeing Chris Eliopoulous heading up a revival of ’90s arcade shooter Golly! Ghost! that’s described as having “a quirky style that echoes that Slimer feel… where ghosts constantly harass you and give you a hard time for being alive.” That’ll be followed in August by Klonoa, with Jim Zub and Hitoshi Ariga bringing the Playstation star to comic book life. The final new series (for now) comes in September, with Zub teaming with co-writer Erik Zo and artist Steven Cummings for Dragon Spirit, a sword-and-sorcery series that resurrects the arcade game from the 1980s.

Zub is clearly a busy man; he’s also working on one of the two animated web series announced. He’s co-writer (with Matt Moylan) and director of Bravoman: Cartoon of Unequalled Excellence, an adaptation of the popular webcomic that’s been running since the launch of ShiftyLook. The other series has the working title of Mappy: The Beat, and comes from the mind of PVP Online’s Scott Kurtz, who’s not only directing and co-writing (with Kris Straub) the cartoon, but also voicing the lead character. Neither series has a launch date as yet, but Mappy, at least, is promised for before the end of the year.

Talking about the move into original web animation, ShiftyLook’s Editor-in-Chief Rob Pereyda said that the ShiftyLook team has been “extremely pleased with the rapid growth of [the site, and] as such, it was time to take the next step in our progression and move to creating original animation. Just like with our webcomics, the talent we have lined up for web animation is incredible and we know the fans will love it.”
