Ah, our old friend, the Spider-Man cinematic universe. It seems like just yesterday that pundits were absolutely certain that the upcoming box office success of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would lead to separate Venom and Sinister Six spin-offs. Then Marvel swooped in with their darn Captain America: Civil War and the future of these films seemed back up in the air.

Thankfully, Sony chief Tom Rothman shed a little bit of light on the future of the Spider-Man universe for those fans hoping to get a better Venom than Topher Grace. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rothman hinted at the prospect of seeing more of Spider-Man’s supporting cast on the screen.

Since you teamed with Marvel, do you plan to make a whole Spider-Man universe? Do you have plans for more work with Marvel?
Yes to both those questions. It’s been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel.

Who has greenlight authority?
Sony has the ultimate authority. But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they’re doing. We start shooting the new Spider-Man in Atlanta [in mid-June].

Granted, there’s not a lot here, but Rothman does answer a few key questions regarding Sony’s plans for the future. Yes, they do still have plans for a Spider-Man universe. Yes, they still have the final say as to what movies do or do not get made at their studio. Later in that interview, Rothman also says that his job is not to trim down the costs of the franchise, but rather, to invest in things that are profitable. In other words, if Spider-Man: Homecoming makes a whole boatload of money, you better believe that Sony will get back into the super-powered arachnid game.

It’s been a while since we had a proper Spider-Man movie, so it’s easy to forget that Peter Parker has some of the best enemies and allies in the entire Marvel universe. If Marvel and Sony can combine to make the character work onscreen once and for all, we might remember why we used to think of Spider-Man as one of the best superheroes of them all.
