Marvel and Sony’s big Spider-Man deal is a huge source of excitement for fans — not only are we excited about the prospect of a genuinely good Spider-Man reboot, but we’re finally going to see Spidey get in on all that sweet Avengers action. We’ve heard a lot from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Spider-Man director Jon Watts, but not much from the new web-slinger himself. In a new interview, Tom Holland shares his thoughts on the franchise and also addresses the injury he suffered on the Captain America: Civil War set.

In an interview with Hey U Guys, Holland was asked if Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s films would have any influence on how he portrays the new Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Holland had a pretty good (and safe) answer:

I think it’s impossible not to, they were so great and such real and rich performances and there’s obviously factors I love and I will continue to try and recreate, but I think the most important thing at the moment is making a film which is obviously of the same character but make it a new and exciting movie.

Say what you will about Webb’s films, but Andrew Garfield’s take on Peter Parker was hardly the issue. Both Garfield and Tobey Maguire played the role really well, and it will be interesting to see how Holland evolves the character. Previously, Feige and Watts have expressed their desire to make a film similar to John Hughes’ classic ’80s teen movies, putting a younger Peter Parker in high school — and keeping him there through more than one film.

Holland will make his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, and Holland spoke briefly about the film — in particular, the injury he received on set:

It was my own mistake. I basically fell over and bashed my face in front of about two hundred crew members, so not my most heroic moment! It was luckily just before my last shot; they were like, ‘Roll cameras!’, I was getting into position, everything went wrong, and they still did the take anyway. It looks great and they’ll probably just CGI out all the blood, and yeah, I was very lucky.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016. The new Spider-Man reboot arrives on July 28, 2017.
