Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. acknowledged a bitter truth with Coulson’s recent reference that so many great Agent Carter stories would go unrecorded, but Hayley Atwell seems to have taken that challenge literally. Peggy may not return to live-action just yet, but S.H.I.E.L.D.’s founder will return to voiceover in a new animated Avengers: Secret Wars role.

Marvel prides itself on the deep interconnectedness of its cinematic universe. Events in one movie continue to the next, and plot threads from years earlier continue to resonates in the lives of the company’s characters. Captain America: Civil War incorporated elements of almost every single Marvel movie that preceded it. Even relatively forgotten MCU movies, like The Incredible Hulk, were rendered important in its massive comic-book tapestry. (Hulk nemesis General Ross, played by William Hurt, made his first Marvel appearance since Incredible Hulk in Civil War, as the current Secretary of State who tries to get the Avengers to agree to the U.S. government’s demands for more accountability.) In Marvel, everything counts and everything connects.

This weekend we were at Flame Con in Brooklyn to capture the kaleidoscopic cosplay strutting through the queer comics convention's second exhibition. Highlights include Stevonnie, Wiccan, Jubilee, Stranger Things' Barb, Rufio, multiple Magnetos, and a disgruntled Asgardian coffee shop employee!

ABC notably pumped Marvel’s brakes this past year, to decline additional Agent Carter, an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff or any other series, but the next phase of Marvel's TV ambitions could pick up in only a matter of weeks. ABC execs say they’ll meet with Marvel in a few weeks’ time to discuss their options toward a series “we all feel is as creatively strong as it can be.”

The writing for Agent Carter seemed pretty much on the wall with the announcement of Hayley Atwell’s ABC Conviction pilot, even as many suggested the Marvel star could balance filming both. Sadly, Conviction won the day regardless, but according to Atwell, ABC might have commissioned Agent Carter specials to help fill the gap between actual seasons.

Once the patron saint of TV rescues, Netflix seems more focused on its own original content than picking up stragglers, but the wealth of Marvel content had Agent Carter fans optimistic Peggy might live out Season 3 on the streaming service. Sadly not so, as Netflix bosses now admit “it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

Anyone sitting in the Captain America: Civil War theater had at least some pang of discomfort at Steve embracing a flirtation with Sharon Carter, great niece to his one true love, the late Peggy Carter. Even Agent Carter herself, Hayley Atwell has weighed in, but now might go full supervillain to curb the new pairing. “You can’t tap that!”, Atwell said at Dallas Comic-Con over the weekend.

We’re still not over the loss of Marvel’s Agent Carter, even as those rescue hashtags and petitions seem to lose steam, but worse is the knowledge what we might have had.
