‘Detective Comics’ #934 Is Rebuilding The Batman Family And It’s Genuinely Great

Detective Comics #934

One of the more interesting things about DC's practice of throwing out its existing continuity every once in a while and starting over with a new reboot is that it never quite gets to Batman himself. Sure, there are bits and pieces that are changed --- as the years go by, you lose elements like Joe Chill and Carter Nichols, until someone decides they want to bring them back again, for instance, and you might even get something as extreme as Zero Year coming along to supplant Year One --- but there's never really the kind of clean break with previous continuity that you see with Superman or Wonder Woman.

Instead, the core of what's going on with the character always carries over into a shift in focus, a new direction that brings one of those elements to the forefront in a new way. And this week, when Detective Comics returned to its original numbering under James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas and Marilyn Patrizio, that's exactly what happened. It's the same Batman that we had before Rebirth, but with a new emphasis on his relationship to his extended family of sidekicks and partners. And it turns out that it's exactly what I wanted out of a Batman comic.

Who Is DC’s Best Legacy Character? (Batman Division)

Who Is The Best Batman Legacy Character?

It was only a week ago that we asked you to vote on DC's best legacy character, and while I'm happy to say that our audience made the correct choice by giving Wally West a... runaway victory, there was one set of heroes completely absent from the poll. Over the past 75 years, Batman has racked up an impressive roster of sidekicks, allies and hangers-on, and with them, an entire set of legacies so large that they would have overwhelmed the initial poll.

That's why we're giving you the chance to sift through the Robins, Batgirls, and even the Batmans themselves as we ask, Who is the best Batman legacy character?

Awkward Superheroes Trying to Get Along: James Tucker, Jay Oliva and Phil Bourassa Talk ‘Batman: Bad Blood’

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros.

here's another new Batman animated movie on the horizon from DC and Warner Bros. Animation. Shocking, I know. Due to arrive in 2016, Batman: Bad Blood centers around the disappearance of Batman himself, and features Nightwing, Damian Wayne and other members for the Bat-family searching for their mentor. Though it draws a little inspiration from events surrounding Batman, Inc., Bad Blood is another the DC Animated Universe's original tales. More importantly, it finally introduces some much-needed diversity into the animated Bat-family with additions of Batwoman and Batwing.

At New York Comic Con, the creative team and some of the cast gathered to talk about the film. We were on hand for the round table session with director Jay Oliva, character designer Phil Bourassa and the DC animated feature supervising producer, James Tucker to talk about the film, and the importance of getting new blood beyond the traditional heroes into these direct-to-video features.

Buy This Book: ‘DC Bombshells’ #1 Knocks It Out Of The Park

DC Bombshells #1

At first glance, DC Bombshells seems like it's operating on a pretty weird premise. It is, after all, a digital comic based on a line of statues that reimagine the company's heroines with retro, pinup-inspired designs, and while a lot of them have been pretty great, trying to create a narrative based around an aesthetic seems like a tough task. In practice, though, Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage don't just rise to the occasion, they demolish it.

In a summer that's been marked by some of DC's strongest new titles in years, from Black Canary to Prez, the first digital chapter of Bombshells came out swinging and knocked it out of the park with what might just be the best first issue of the bunch.

Adam Hughes Looks Back on His Famous ‘Real Power of the DC Universe’ Poster [Interview]

realpowerofthedcu-feat

It's inspired cosplayers and artists alike, and hangs in pride of place on many comic fans' walls, yet Adam Hughes' Real Power of the DC Universe poster was originally just a giveaway at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2008. Recreating a high glamour photo shoot with DC's biggest female heroes (and anti-heroes), including Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Power Girl, Supergirl, Batwoman, and Oracle, the poster is both a great piece of work and a wonderful tribute to these powerful characters.

The poster has become a truly iconic image over the past few years, so we reached out to Hughes to find out the story behind its creation, and to learn about the choices he made --- including why Catwoman is in a black dress!

Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving communities of costuming that exist, such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. Over the years, the cosplay community has evolved into a creative outlet for many fans to establish and showcase some impressive feats of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics at conventions.

The Great Super-Costume Poll: Bat Pals

supercostume2

Costume design is one of the great strengths of the superhero genre, a way to establish distinctive visual shorthand for a character and reveal key details about concept, purpose, and personality. But which is the best superhero costume of all time? This month, we’re asking you to decide, by voting up your favorites and voting down the rest. When we have your votes, we’ll compile a list of the greatest super-costumes of all time.

In today's poll we look at some of costumes worn by the members of notorious loner Batman's extended bat-family, including the recently revamped Burnside take on Batgirl, the original Robin design first worn by Dick Grayson, and the same character's much later Nightwing costume. We haven't included the Nightwing costume with the fringe, as we're pretty sure that costume isn't going to win any polls.
