You Go For Broke On Apokalips: Corinna Bechko & Gabriel Hardman Talk ‘Sensation Comics’ [Interview]

Sensation Comics #16

Over the past few years, Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko have quickly become one of the creative teams that I look forward to seeing the most, and this week, they're giving me a pretty good reason to be excited. Today marks the release of the first installment of their three-part story in Sensation Comics, the digital-first Wonder Woman anthology, which finds DC's Amazon Princess sent on a rescue mission to Apokolips, the home of the evil New Gods.

To find out more, I spoke with Bechko and Hardman about their approach to Wonder Woman, their take on Jack Kirby's cosmic evil, and just why it is that page turns are so magical.

‘Creepy’ #18 Celebrates 50 Years Of The Macabre With All-Star Creators Lineup

About a decade after the formation of the Comics Code Authority in 1954 effectively killed off EC Comics' popular line of horror comics, Warren Publishing aimed to bring back some of that malevolent magic. The result was the anthology series Creepy (and later, its sister book, Eerie). Published as a black-and-white magazine, the series didn't have to adhere to the Comics Code's strict content standards, and as such, was able to push the envelope in ways comics in the mid-1960s generally couldn't.

Now, the book's current publisher, Dark Horse, is celebrating the magazine's 50th anniversary with a big, blowout issue featuring work by Fred Van Lente, Corinna Bechko, Dustin Nguyen, Peter Bagge, Alison Sampson, and Art Baltazar, among others.

Gabriel Hardman And Corinna Bechko Chronicle The Worst Breakup In Space In Dark Horse’s ‘Deep Gravity’

Deep Gravity #1, Dark Horse Comics

As you might expect from someone who starts relationships by explaining to his dates that they will never truly be able to replace Batman in his heart, I have had some pretty rough breakups in my time. That said, they've never been so bad that I felt the need to dedicate six years of my life to a round trip through interstellar space just to get a little closure, and apparently that puts me one step ahead of Steven Paxon, the star of Dark Horse's new sci-fi series, Deep Gravity.

Written by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko, with art by Fernando Baldo and a series concept by Dark Horse's Mike Richardson, the series starts with exactly that journey, with Steven halfway through a six-year round trip, having journeyed three years just to ask Michelle, the woman who broke his heart, why she had to. Also, and this is key, a giant green alien elephant tree monster is also involved.

Hire This Woman: Writer Corinna Bechko

Untitled-1

In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”

After working with animals for most of her life, writer Corinna Bechko's work debuted in comics with the creator-owned Heathentown. Readers may know her name best, though, from her work on major properties like Star Wars and Planet of the Apes.

Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko Bring Monster Sci-Fi Serial ‘Station To Station’ To ‘Dark Horse Presents’

untitled-1-1350928406

When you think about it, we're pretty lucky that Gabriel Hardman makes comics. My fellow sequential art and illustration admirers probably know his excellent work on Marvel books like Agents of Atlas, Hulk, Secret Avengers, and Incredible Hercules (among others), but Hardman's visions reach a much bigger number of people through his work as a storyboard artist on such popular films as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman Returns, Spider-Man 3, that awesome but aborted Kerry Conran pitch for John Carter of Mars... the list is impressive and very long. Film is a lucrative field, of
