A little over twenty years ago, a group of creators left the confines of Marvel Comics for the wild world of indies. By forming Image Comics, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino set a new precedent for comics.
Of course, the 1990s were a dangerous time for the industry. The speculative market imploded not long after the Image exodus, and the comic market still hasn't recovered all these years later. But we're not here to lament the days of old, when single issues sold in the millions and drawing comics was as big a deal as being in Guns 'N Roses (depending on how many pages Wizard devoted to you in a given month).
