The Nominees for the 2016 Harvey Awards have been announced, and Valiant Entertainment is definitely well-represented this year. The publisher dominates the fields with 50 total nominations. In the categories of Special Award for Humor, Best Graphic Album Previous Published, Special Award for Excellence in Presentation, and Best Domestic Reprint Project, all of the nominees save one are from Valiant.
There are of course books from other publishers also doing well, with Marvel's The Vision and Boom's Giant Days both receiving multiple nominations. Standbys like Saga and Lumberjanes are also represented.
Other than that one time that NASCAR Heroes was nominated a few years ago, the Harvey Awards are not usually rocked with controversy. This year, however, has been marked by one notable exception: Chip Zdarsky's refusal to accept the Special Award For Humor In Comics for his work on Sex Criminals.
In a post at his website, Zdarsky discussed his reasons for declining the award, specifically citing the inherent unfairness of not including writer Matt Fraction, who, in Zdarsky's words, "supplies 90% of the humor."
Last weekend at Baltimore Comic-Con, the 27th annual Harvey Awards were held, and in one of the least surprising developments in the history of the Harveys, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga took home a few more awards to add to a shelf that I'm sure is already collapsing under the weight of its many honors.
Named for MAD Magazine editor and cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman (who, interestingly enough, did not win the award he was nominated for this year), the Harveys are voted on by industry professionals, and this year's winners represent a pretty interesting crop of current comics, including CA favorites like Lumberjanes, Hellboy In Hell, and even Dick Tracy. Check out a full roster of winners and nominees below!
A nomination for a Harvey Award, named for legendary MAD Magazine cartoonist and editor Harvey Kurtzman, is unquestionably the most prestigious honor that has ever been bestowed on a comic book about NASCAR. Seriously. It happened in 2009 with NASCAR Heroes.
The Harvey Awards have released the list of this year's nominees. As you might expect, the usual suspects like Hawkeye and Daredevil were honored, along with other nomination leaders Saga and Quantum and Woody. Archie, Valiant and Image all received a good amount of nominations, but it's BOOM! Studios, along with its Archaia imprint, that earned the most recognition with 26 nominations; well more than any other publisher.
Comics pros eligible to vote in the 2013 Harvey Awards now have a full list of final nominees to consider, and have until August 19 to cast their votes online. Marvel's Hawkeye, by Matt Fraction, David Aja and others, and Image's Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples and others, tied for the most nominations with seven each, including best writer, best artist and best single issue. Both books a
