For nearly seven years, Kirby Krackle have been proving themselves as one of the preeminent nerd rock bands, with songs covering topics from the Great Lake Avengers to Game of Thrones’ Night's Watch. Their high energy, passionate style has gained them a worldwide fanbase and has now led to a partnership with Disney and Marvel to produce new, original songs for Star-Lord’s mixtape in the animated Guardians of the Galaxy series.
The first of these songs, Gotta Get Back, debuted this past Sunday as part of an episode that sets the Guardians and their resident destroyer Drax against The Destroyer of Asgard! ComicsAlliance spoke to Kyle Stevens of Kirby Krackle about writing songs inspired by Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix, and what songs would be on the rest of the Guardians’ mixtapes.
Nerd-rock group Kirby Krackle has been making geek rock and roll for years now, and is releasing their fifth studio album, Mutate, Baby today. The band sings about a little of everything related to geek culture: comics, video games, genre television, and general geek experiences. Their newest album has a lot in common with their previous albums, but it's also about putting a positive spin on geek life.
ComicsAlliance spoke with KK frontman Kyle Stevens to talk about this new album and the band's evolution and inspiration.
Jack Kirby is very arguably the single most influential figure in the history of American comics. He produced countless stories in a career that spanned seven decades, inventing and re-inventing genres and styles every step of the way. He inspired generations of artists and writers; created and co-created thousands of characters; defined the visual vocabulary of superheroes; and believed in the potential of comics to be both entertainment and art, long before most people imagined these stories would be remembered past the four weeks that they sat on newsstands.
Today would have been Kirby’s 97th birthday, and to mark the occasion we’ve assembled a series of posts commemorating the life and work of the man known to American comics fans as “The King.” For this piece, we asked some of our favorite creators and other comics pros to celebrate Jack Kirby with their impressions of his characters, life, and legacy – and we got so many responses, we'll have another installment of all-star tributes tomorrow!
If you've ever been listening to pop music and been frustrated because the song you're listening to is not about Green Lantern, then you are the exact target audience for Kirby Krackle. Formed in 2009 in Seattle, Kirby Krackle is a band known for its high energy, geek-friendly rock 'n' roll, and they've spent the past five years touring comic book conventions across America and Australia.
Now, to celebrate that milestone, they're putting out Kirby Krackle: Geekiest Hits, Volume 1. The album features 20 songs about the Konami Code, henchmen and why they love superheroes, including five from the first album (recorded as a duo) that have been newly recorded this year with the full band. Check out the full track listing below, along with a few samples!
In Kirby Krackle's discography, you'll find songs sung from the point of view of Mario, Thor, a vampire, a Fallout vault dweller, a free-agent henchman, and Tony Stark's life coach. There's plenty of that in the band's new album, "Sounds Like You," which comes out July 9, but there's also a good bit of sincerity...
DVD: The original 1974 Wonder Woman TV pilot starring Cathy Lee Crosby and Superboy: The Complete Second Season are now on DVD. Reminder: Season 2 is when Superboy fights Dracula in space.
