On The Cheap: Your Best Bets For The Viz Manga ‘Shonen Jump’ Sale

One Punch Man, ONE and Murata

This week, Viz and Comixology launched what is probably the most overwhelming digital comic sales since... well, since last month, I guess, when someone decided that it was a good idea to put literally every Dark Horse comic on sale for half off. This time, its's a sale on action manga from Shonen Jump, featuring almost a thousand volumes, including popular series like Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto and Eichiro Oda's One Piece, but it's going fast. The sale ends tomorrow.

20 Awesome Covers From Classic ‘Shonen Jump’

Shonen00

It's no exaggeration to say that Shonen Jump is one of the cornerstones of manga. Since it started in 1968, the weekly anthology has given rise to some of the biggest titles in manga history, including One Piece, Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, and more -- and, judging by the covers, an awful lot of stories about baseball.

And I know that, because I just spent a good amount of time browsing an incredible Flickr gallery from Sao Paolo, Brazil's Kami Sama Explorer Museum, where they've collected a massive amount of covers from Shonen Jump's 46-year history, going from the first issue in July of 1968 all the way up to 2009. It's fantastic to see them lined up next to each other, because you can see the evolution of some of the most dominant styles in manga as you browse through, but there are also a lot of really great individual covers. So before you head over and take a look at the full gallery, check out 20 of my favorites below!

FINALLY: Viz Media Manga Is Now Available On ComiXology

Viz Manga

Good news for people who like keeping their digital comics in one easily accessible location: Today, Comixology announced that its going to be distributing digital comics from Viz Media, the publisher of a truly massive library of manga titles. Viz manga will now be available through the Comixology site, meaning that the comics can be downloaded to the popular (if controversially scaled back) Comixology app for Android and iOS devices, joining... well, pretty much every publisher on the block and keeping Comixology as a central destination for folks who want to buy digital comics.

The announcement is accompanied by the release of over 500 volumes of manga on Comixology today, including ComicsAlliance favorites like One Piece and One Punch Man, as well as a somewhat obscure title called Dragon Ball.

Why The Arlong Park Sequence In ‘One Piece’ Is The Greatest Comic Book Fight Scene Of All Time [Opinion]

One Piece by Echiro Oda

Listen, I realize that I'm a little late to the party when it comes to Echiro Oda's One Piece. It's literally the best-selling manga of all time, but I've only just gotten into it over the past few months, on the recommendation of former CA writer David Brothers. I was hooked right away -- the book's signature mix of action, character, slapstick comedy and insanely over-the-top violence was fantastic right from the start, blending in a way that I find completely irresistible.

Then I got to volume 10, and the characters arrived in Arlong Park for a single fight scene that literally lasted for over 250 pages. And as someone who loves fight comics, I can say pretty confidently that it is quite possibly the best fight scene I have ever seen in comics. Not in manga, in all of comics. And believe me, I've seen a lot of 'em.

‘One Piece’ And ‘Dragon Ball Z’ Throw Down In Real Life For The Best Video Game Ad Ever

Goku vs. Monkey D. Luffy art installation for J-Stars Victory Vs.

Apologies to anyone in marketing who might be reading this, but video game ads don't usually do much to get me excited. I think the last one that really made an impact was the one for Saints Row IV where they misspelled the name of the game and then went back to correct it all while blaring dubstep, and showing you explosions, but even that wasn't exactly "memorable," you know?

Now imagine that you're heading over to the department store, thinking about picking up a new video game, and you round the corner to see Goku from Dragon Ball Z and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece in the middle of a life-sized brawl that has shattered the street, snapped a lamppost and flipped a car. Well, if you're heading to the Shibuya Parco store in Tokyo, that's exactly what you'll see, as an awesome promo for the upcoming J-Stars Victory Vs. And it is awesome.
