Funko’s Impopsters Line Re-imagines Batman’s Rogues as the Dark Knight

Funko
Funko

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Funko's latest Pop figure line, Impopsters (I'm also not sure about that brand name, but what do I know?). On one hand, putting some (slightly) new spins on characters that have been around for decades is cool, and it lets Funko get a little creative with the standard form bodies they've been using to create hundreds and hundreds of collectibles. But I'm also not wild about just Batmanning the Dark Knight's rogues gallery. The concept certainly makes sense though. People love Batman and his big bads, so why not combine them into one thing?

Impopsters is just the latest in a long line of Funko's attempts to shake up the game with miniature, budget vinyl collectibles. While I wonder if this was the series of collectibles Funko alluded to in the most recent Marvel Collector Corps, I'm definitely wondering what the Marvel versions of these are going to look like. Oh, that's right. Impopsters won't just be limited this Batman series. Funko apparently has designs on the rest of the DCU and Marvel Comics, too.

NECA’s ‘Batman Returns’ Penguin is Disgustingly Awesome

NECA
NECA

After the success of Batman, Warner Bros. once again tapped Tim Burton to bring the Dark Knight to the sliver screen in the sequel, Batman Returns. While there was no Internet to rampantly speculate about what villain Batman should face off against after the Joker's demise at the conclusion of the 1989 film, the possibilities were endless. Batman's rogue gallery was massive and full of great foils for Bruce Wayne's alter-ego. Imagine the world's surprise when Burton, being as Burton as he could possibly be, tapped Danny DeVito for the role of the Penguin.
Now, some 20+ years later, NECA is finally giving DeVito's Penguin the action figure due he so deserved. Announced at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, the quarter-scale figure captures everything that made the Penguin such a memorable character, right down to the blue blood, natty hair, and toothy grimace that inspired many a nightmare in terrified kids.

The Black Widow Strikes In This Week’s New ‘Batman ’66’ — No, Not That Black Widow

Batman01

If you haven't been keeping up with Batman '66, DC Comics' digital-first series based on the classic Adam West/Burt Ward television show, rest assured that it has continued to be awesome. Recent issues have seen a terrifying team-up with the Joker and Catwoman, a sinister plot to create a television adaptation of Batman's adventures, and -- perhaps most awesome of all -- the debut of a giant robot version of Batman that fought crime with the power of jet boots and rocket fists. It's... It's pretty great, y'all.

But one of the more interesting things about the last few episodes -- er, issues is that they've thrown the spotlight on some of the more obscure villains from the show who never made it in the comics, like the Minstrel and Bookworm, and this week, it's the harrowing, haunting return of the Black Widow! Not to be confused with Marvel's Natasha Romanoff or Scarlett Johansson.

Check Out The First Half-Hour Of The New ‘Arkham Origins’ DLC, ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ [Video]

Batman Arkham Origins Cold Cold Heart DLC

Remember how a big chunk of the game map was frozen and icy in Arkham City? The new DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins"Cold, Cold Heart" extends that idea a bit, with the ice seemingly extending throughout the city as Penguin and Mr. Freeze terrorize the landscape on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (but not the Wii) on April 22.

A leaked video reveals the first half hour of the DLC, the first Arkham DLC that actually adds single-player, storyline-driven gameplay instead of challenge packs and multiplayer maps. Much of it takes place in Wayne Manor as Bruce Wayne charges to the Batcave to pick up his batsuit. (Another toyetic iceproof costume shows up later.)

Bizarro Back Issues: Here’s That Joker-Batman Team-Up To Solve The Penguin’s Murder You’ve Always Wanted (1982)

Brave and the Bold #191, DC Comics

A couple weeks ago when I was writing about why the Penguin has never been one of my favorite Batman villains, I mentioned one of my earliest favorite comics: An issue of The Brave and the Bold that was nominally a Penguin story, but was more focused on the Joker. The main point then was that the Penguin was kind of a bit player even in one of his own stories, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that there might be some subtle nuances to this story that would be worth a closer examination.

There aren't. I mean, it's a mid-80s issue of Brave and the Bold, and those things are about as subtle as a brick upside the head. But it is a pretty great issue, and as an added bonus, it features a handy guide to everything you should not do if you're running a business in Gotham City.
