I don't think that there's ever been a better time to be a fain of Sailor Moon. Not only is Viz releasing the classic 1992 animated series on Hulu -- uncut, with new subtitles and a new dub on the way -- but there's a new animated series set to debut next month, simulcast around the world as it airs in Japan. The show's called Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, and now, there's a trailer for it.
Unfortunately, the trailer lacks what I would consider to be the single most iconic image of not just Sailor Moon, but the entirety of anime. While Usagi does in fact run out of her house late for school there is no toast in her mouth. Other than that, though, it's pretty fantastic.
Each weekday, ComicsAlliance brings you a carefully selected variety of links from around the web about comics and comics-related media, including movies, video games, toys, and whatever else might be worth noting. Quite frankly, these are items you may just need to know about to have a productive day. Take a look at today's hand-picked links after the jump.
Though Kodansha will remain the publisher of Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga, Viz Media announced last Friday that they've licensed effectively all of its anime adaptation, including the never-before-released-in-America Sailor Moon Sailor Stars seriesand the franchise's upcoming anime reboot, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. Episodes will be available to watch on Viz's Neon Alley streaming service and Hulu beginning today, with additional content added every Monday. It's true; scouts honor.
It's a pretty good time to be a Sailor Moon fan. Not only is there a new animated series set to kick off with a worldwide release this summer and a new line of high-end action figures to populate your bookshelves, but there's also a resurgence of material created by fans as the franchise gets ready to relaunch.
Case in point: Moon Animate Make-Up, a full-length recreation of an episode of the original Sailor Moon anime, featuring a different animator for every shot of the show. And yes: That includes the "Sailor Moon Says" PSA at the end.
Action figure collectors will soon be able to assemble Sailor Moon's core crew of Sailor Scouts. This September Sailor Jupiter will join Sailors Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus as part of Banai's S.H. Figuarts line. Like the other figures in the line, SJ seems modeled principally after the Sailor Moon anime that originally ran in the '90s, but it should still sit fine with readers of creator Naoko Takeuchi's manga and the upcoming Sailor Moon Crystal anime based on her art style.
If you woke up today and felt the unexpected urge to win some love by daylight and then fight a little evil when the sun goes down, there's a good reason for that: the first image of the upcoming Sailor Moon reboot has been released at the official website, kicking off the countdown to the debut of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal.
Designed to be a stricter adaptation of the Naoko Takeuchi's original manga rather than the anime that ran in the '90s and introduced worldwide viewers to the world of magical girls, Crystal is set to stream worldwide starting this July. And if this image is any indication, it might just involve Usagi's hair reaching truly out-of-control status. Check out the full image below!
Although cosplay has been present for decades within the comics, anime, and sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, social media has played an integral role in the thriving communities of costuming that exist, such as Cosplay.com and the Superhero Costuming Forum. Over the years, the cosplay community has evolved into a creative outlet for many fans to establish and showcase some impressive feats of homemade disguise, craftsmanship, and sartorial superheroics at conventions. In honor of the caped crusaders of the convention scene, ComicsAlliance has created Best Cosplay Ever (This Week), an ongoing collection of some of the most impeccable, creative, and clever costumes that we’ve discovered and assembled into a super-showcase of pure fan-devoted talent.
This week, we're looking at cosplay inspired by the work of illustrator Babs Tarr. Best known in fandom circles for her Bosozoku Sailor Scouts piece, Tarr's art frequently incorporates a combination of femininity and toughness in both her original work and redesigns of licensed characters, creating a world where magical women and girl gangs are one in the same. With the onslaught of cosplayers creating their own takes on classic characters and pulling inspiration from fan redesigns, it's not surprising that Tarr's provocative style and whimsical aesthetic have caught the eye of stylish fans and inspired many cosplayers to incorporate her designs into their costumes. We spoke to Tarr about her work and about the cosplay that her work has inspired.
After some delays that set it back for a year, a new Sailor Moon anime series will finally debut premiere this July, according to the franchise's 20th anniversary project website.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon from Toei animiation, the same company responsible for the mid-1990s anime series, will be available worldwide, subtitled in 10 different languages, streaming on the Niconico service. Munehisa Sakai, who has worked on the One Piece TV series and the One Piece: Strong World, Suite Precure movie is the new series' director and the theme music is by pop group Momoiro Clover Z.
